Taunton’s Firepool Scheme Gets Outline Planning

Last night, Taunton Deane Borough Council granted Outline Planning permission for the mixed-use ‘Firepool’ development proposed for one of the largest brownfield sites in the West Country.

Situated to the north of Taunton, the £105m scheme promoted by St Modwen will include: waterfront restaurants, a mix of retail units and offices, a cinema, 200 homes and apartments, quality public spaces, parking – and, significantly, a much-needed pedestrian link with improved green infrastructure between Taunton Station and the town centre.

The site is widely considered a crucial strategic pillar of the town’s long-term objective to better incorporate its beautiful river asset into its overall proposition, to create better links between residential areas, commercial zones and transport hubs, and to deliver a model Garden Town for the 21st century.

Not surprisingly, therefore, the project has navigated a very long and rocky road to get to this point. Congratulations to all involved.
