New Resi-need Algorithm

In response to feedback – much of it negative, particularly from rural Local Authorities – the Government yesterday revised its formula for calculating local housing need.

The Government has set a target of building 300,000 new homes across England, each year until the mid-’20s. The new approach seeks to encourage more of these to be built in England’s largest cities and urban areas, with a 35% loading on the need calculation required for the following: Birmingham, Bradford, Brighton and Hove, Bristol, Coventry, Derby, Kingston upon Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne, Nottingham, Plymouth, Reading, Sheffield, Southampton, Stoke-on-Trent, and Wolverhampton.

All the ifs, buts, caps and tweaks can be found on the Government’s website.
